Making And Fairing The F-22 Production Float

Vertical foam stripping - the fore and aft battens ensure that foam lays in place very fair. All one has
to do is be sure that the screws from the outside hold foam strips firmly down against battens.
Heat bending the foam around the gunwale radius is tricky. but one soon learns the tricks.

Now laminated - completely accessible and very easy to do.

The vertically foam stripped hull out of form frames and laminated. It can be seen here how fair the foam
strips are - screw holes have been filled along with the odd low spot which are mostly on the rounded
gunwale area - the only tricky part of the foam stripping. The plan built F-22 did not have these for
ease and simplicity, but the more rounded corners can be worth the extra work.

The float plug now faired and painted. It is hard to beat a well rounded float with a finish like this.

This is what you see forever, and while it can take longer, the finished result can be well worthwhile

A hand built F-22 float as per plans, with tighter gunwale radius - no need to heat bend foam.
